Sketchbook Play - Make a Mixed Media Concertina Sketchbook

This is a short, fun workshop to learn how to make simple folding sketchbooks for mixed-media work. On this workshop you will make your own sketchbook and prepare it ready to draw in. You will add pockets and add paint and texture to make a book that gets you beyond 'white-page fear'. You'll finish the session with a beautiful handmade concertina sketchbook.
In my studio I have lots of sketchbooks tracing my creative development. There are small concertina books, large project books, folded pamphlets from one day courses. Each one has allowed me to go deeper into my practice.

Getting started can be hard - fear of failure, procrastination and perfectionism can hold us back.

Making your own sketchbook can take you past fear of the white- age and connect you to making and get you ready to start a project.

Making sketchbooks is one of my greatest pleasures!

Made in 2020, this was the first course I created when I took all my courses online. In this online class I will show you how I make my own simple sketchbooks. I have an allergic reaction to the white page! But once those pages are enlivened with texture and colour I feel ownership of my sketchbook and want to fill it with my expression of the world around me.

You will end the course with a beautiful handmade, concertina sketchbook ready to start a new project - inspired and enlivened by the process of making! Sometimes you have to lean in sideways to kickstart your creativity and giving yourself permission to make a sketchbook is a great start!

Materials you will need for the class:
  • A4 cartridge paper
  • A4 coloured paper
  • Old book pages
  • Old envelopes
  • Tester pot /emulsion paint
  • Acrylic paints
  • Sewing machine (optional but recommended)
  • Glue - I use uhu but a pritt stick will do.

What you will learn on this course:
  • How to turn off the negative self-talk
  • to give yourself permission to play
  • preparing papers to work on top of
  • How to stay curious

I've planned the content to give you a full day of creativity or you can spread it over a couple of sessions.

You will be invited to join a private Facebook group for students on this course so that you can share your ideas and receive feedback from myself and others. It will help keep you inspired, motivated and accountable for getting started and fulfilling your create aspirations.

This course consists of:
  • Welcome session
  • 4 video tutorials allowing you to follow me as I make a sketchbook
  • Access to my ongoing Facebook community to continue your creative journey in a supportive, like-minded community

What you will need to have:
  • The materials on the materials list (see above)
  • Access via a PC or laptop to my website where you can access the password protected pages
  • Broadband wifi with sufficient speed to watch video content
  • You will also need a willingness to have a go and try new ways of working - not focussed on the outcomes, but on developing a creative flow and adapting new techniques
  • Time - a day that you can set aside for yourself

What to expect:
  • You can access the course immediately and at any point. Delivery is via video tutorials that you can start, stop and repeat as you wish.
  • There are tasks set for you to try what you have been shown in the videos.
  • You are encouraged to take photos of what you create and upload them my Facebook Group.
  • You can ask questions in the group, or by email.

If you have any questions, please get in touch by email by clicking the envelope icon in the page footer - you may find an answer to your question in the Frequently Asked Questions page (FAQ's). The link is at the top of the page.

Online Student

"I had my doubts about an online course but it's been wonderful. With all the videos it's as if you are there in the room. In fact I got more one to one tuition than I had on some courses where the tutor has been in the room!"
